Lead Shielded 200-Liter Drum Overpack
The Lead Shielded Drum Overpack provides effective radiation shielding and secondary containment for standard 200-liter waste drums. With 50 mm lead shielding on all sides and a specialized two-component polyurethane epoxy coating, this overpack combines dose rate reduction with excellent decontamination properties for nuclear facility operations.
Nuclear Shields engineered this overpack with uniform 50 mm lead shielding on all surfaces—walls, lid, and base. This consistent shielding thickness simplifies dose rate calculations and ensures predictable attenuation regardless of drum orientation within the overpack. The symmetrical design eliminates weak points that could create localized dose rate hotspots during storage or handling. The 50 mm lead thickness provides substantial gamma attenuation for typical LLW and ILW drum contents, reducing surface dose rates to levels suitable for storage areas and routine handling operations.

Product description
Sealed containment
The overpack includes a seal between the body and lid, providing secondary containment for the waste drum inside. This seal prevents the release of contamination in the event of drum failure and contains any liquids that might escape from a compromised primary container. The sealed design also protects drum contents from environmental moisture during storage.
Decontamination-ready surface finish
The exterior features a two-component polyurethane epoxy coating system engineered specifically for nuclear applications:
- Acid resistant — Withstands exposure to decontamination chemicals and acidic environments without degradation
- Shock resistant — Maintains integrity despite impacts during handling operations
- Smooth finish — Non-porous surface prevents contamination ingress and enables thorough cleaning

Flexible handling options
The overpack accommodates standard nuclear facility material handling equipment:
- Forklift shafts — Integrated into the bottom frame for direct pickup by facility forklifts
- Corner lifting hooks — Four lifting points at the overpack corners enable crane handling with standard rigging
- Center lid lifting hook — A dedicated lift point in the lid center allows independent lid removal for drum loading and unloading
This combination of handling features ensures compatibility with existing facility equipment and supports efficient drum overpacking workflows.
Robust steel construction
The overpack body and lid are fabricated from steel, providing structural integrity for stacking and mechanical protection for the enclosed drum. The rigid construction maintains shielding geometry throughout service life and protects against damage during handling and transport operations.
