Shielded Cask
The Lead Shielded Cask SWB1120 provides heavy-duty radiation shielding for overpacking and transporting standard 200-liter drums within nuclear facilities. With 95 mm of lead shielding in the side walls and robust steel construction, this cask enables safe movement of radioactive waste drums while maintaining worker dose rates at acceptable levels.
Shielding for internal facility transport and storage
Nuclear Shields designed this shielded cask specifically for storing and moving 200-liter drums between locations within your facility, from waste generation points to storage areas, processing stations, or loading bays. The cask accepts a single drum, providing complete shielding coverage during transport operations. Unlike long-term storage containers, the SWB1120 is optimized for repeated loading and unloading cycles. The open-top design with removable lid allows quick drum placement using overhead cranes, while the cylindrical interior with positioning bars ensures secure drum alignment during transport.

Product description
Heavy shielding for high-activity drums
The SWB1120 incorporates substantial lead shielding to attenuate gamma radiation from drums containing higher-activity waste:
| Location | Lead Thickness | Steel Thickness | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Side walls | 95 mm | 25 mm | 120 mm |
| Bottom | 72 mm | 30 mm | 102 mm |
| Top (lid) | 72 mm | 30 mm | 102 mm |
This shielding configuration provides significant dose rate reduction for typical LLW and ILW drum contents, enabling transport operations with minimal personnel exposure.
Flexible handling options
The cask base frame incorporates multiple handling provisions for maximum operational flexibility:
- Forklift pockets — Standard forklift access allows quick repositioning throughout the facility
- Crane lifting points — Holes in the corner posts accept lifting eyes for overhead crane operations; the entire cask including lid can be lifted as a unit
- Trolley mounting — Bolt holes in the base frame enable permanent mounting to a dedicated trolley for routine transport routes
This combination of handling options ensures the SWB1120 integrates smoothly into your existing material handling infrastructure, whether that involves forklifts, overhead cranes, or dedicated transfer trolleys.
Secure closure with tamper-evident seals
The removable lid sits within the cask’s corner post structure, with matching holes that enable two levels of security:
- Padlock compatible — Smaller holes accept standard padlocks for basic securing
- Bolt lock security seals — Numbered tamper-evident seals can be installed through the locking holes, providing traceable chain-of-custody documentation for regulatory compliance
Each bolt lock seal carries a unique identification number that can be logged in your facility’s tracking system, creating an auditable record of cask access.
Internal drum positioning
Steel positioning bars inside the cask cavity center the 200-liter drum and prevent movement during transport. This feature protects both the drum and the cask’s internal coating from damage caused by shifting loads, maintaining shielding integrity throughout the cask’s service life.
Manufactured in-house
Nuclear Shields manufactures the SWB1120 entirely in-house at our Netherlands facility, maintaining complete control over quality from raw materials through final assembly. The coated steel exterior provides corrosion protection for long service life in typical nuclear facility environments.
