What is gamma ray attenuation?
Gamma ray attenuation is the percentage of the gamma radiation being stopped by the radiation shielding layer. If the attenuation is 90%, that means the gamma radiation is only 10% of its original value after the shielding layer.
What is the best shielding material for gamma radiation?
When choosing the best material to shield gamma radiation for your situation it is important to look at the requirements. Tungsten is a good material if it is important that the radiation shielding is as thin as possible. However, tungsten is very expensive to use as radiation shielding material. Lead is a great option when a thin radiation shielding layer is required but the budget is a little bit limited.
Lead vs tungsten radiation shielding material
When deciding between using lead or tungsten as radiation shielding material, it is important to look at a few factors. Lead is a soft metal which is easy to deform and has a density of 11,34 g/cm3. Tungsten is a hard metal with a density of 19,25g/cm3. Tungsten mostly comes from China and is difficult to machine due to its hardness, which makes it very expensive. Lead comes from around the world and is easier to machine, making it a more economical option.
Can you make custom lead parts?
Nuclear Shields owns an inhouse lead casting department, making it possible to manufacture custom lead parts. Custom parts can be made from customer supplied drawings or designed based on your requirements in cooperation with Nuclear Shields. Our adhesive lead sheets can be cut to custom shapes with an adhesive layer. These custom adhesive lead parts are standard available with 0.5, 1 or 2 mm lead.
